Off & Running

As I write this, registrations are starting to come in for our classes which start this month. The delay in getting the new ABATE website has put a crimp in it, but the Facebook page seems to have helped a lot. The new registration system is being tweaked as we go. We are looking forward to being connected directly to the Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program’s system for reporting class results. We also have purchased two new bikes to add to the fleet. By keeping bikes updated students can see what is available at dealers that they may want to buy once they graduate. It also helps keep maintenance costs down by having newer bikes on hand.

The date to keep on your calendar for two very good training events this month is Saturday April 26. Buell Bob’s Knock the Rust Off event will be held in Waukesha and an ABATE Rider Training Summit event is at Wisconsin H-D in Oconomowoc. Be Crash Free will be on hand at the Summit. They are the people working on our new registration system. Both events are free and very helpful for building riding skills. See the flyer in this issue and the 1F report for details.

Following Vicki Sanfelipo’s CPR/First Aid class to re-certify our instructors, a group of us decided to sign up for the Accident Scene Management course in Onalaska. It has been many years since I have been through the class, so Shawn and I joined four of our Rider Coaches, several past students, three State Trooper Blue Knights, four EMTs, and six or seven club members. It was quite a varied group, but we all enjoyed the class and learned a lot. The instructors, TJ and Pete, are very good at what they do. The American Legion in Onalaska is a great facility. If you are in the area, stop for a meal or a drink.

By now we should all be out there riding. Watch out for sand on the roads and start easy to refresh those riding skills that have been in hibernation over the winter. Some may even be able to ride to STEAM in Iowa. Have a Happy Easter and check out the new website.

Ride Safe,

Gary
