Conference Reports:

It was a sunny Friday morning, about 60 degrees. Bryan and I had just run up through Superior, Duluth, up the shore of Lake Superior on our way to Thunder Bay. “Hi, what brings you to Canada today? Where ya going? How long ya staying? Got reservations anywhere? Do you have any fruits or vegetables with you? Any live animals? Alcohol or tobacco? Firearms or ammunition? Those are some interesting patches. Tell me about those!”

Well, these on my left are souvenirs of some of the places I’ve ridden. Sturgis, Tomahawk, Tail of the Dragon. These on my right are my membership patches. ABATE of Wisconsin and the Motorcycle Riders’ Foundation.

“Oh, cool! One moment please….” She disappeared from the window for a minute and returned with my Passport and a yellow slip of paper. “Sir, would you please park in the lot over there and come inside to speak with one of our immigration officials?”

So, I followed instructions and they wanted to know all about my cut. These are my souvenirs. The Phoenix on my back represents my right arm that was paralyzed for 6 months in a bad ATV accident. These are my membership patches. “What’s ABATE? What’s MRF? So, you’re like a club? What do you guys do in your club?”

So, I explained that ABATE and MRF are neither clubs, nor gangs. We are motorcycle rights organizations. Petitioning our government for laws that are favorable to motorcyclists. “What kind of laws?” So, I told them all about the Right to Repair.

I didn’t think Canadian border patrol was the time or place to talk about our anti-profiling priorities in the Highway Bill. Senator Johnson’s office was the time and place. Congressman Tiffany’s office was the time and place. Every other Representative’s and every other Senator’s office was another motorcycle freedom fighter’s time and place at our annual Bikers in the Beltway event. We exercised more of our Constitutional rights in one trip than most people (sadly) do their whole lives. By the time we were done, we had the words “or attire” added to the highway bill, so that wearing leathers and patches and riding gear cannot be considered probable cause to harass us in the United States.

I told Rocky, our MRF lobbyist who is the best of the best, that we signed up all of Canada on our way through. I joked we are now the North American Riders Foundation, and he needs to report to Ottawa on Thursday. Actually made the guy laugh!
