Retention 101
A key challenge for our group is not just attracting members but keeping them interested and active once we invite them to join. To retain membership, we as an organization need to encourage a feeling of community and purpose. A common problem is a lack of value, where members leave because they no longer see the benefit of their involvement. To change this attitude, we need to start right off the bat by creating a welcoming environment where new members feel valued from their first interaction or meeting. This can be as simple as a personal welcome at the next regional meeting, which also helps to overcome the lack of inclusion that can leave a new member feeling disconnected and lost.
As long-time members know, we need to keep members involved by giving them meaningful roles and responsibilities. Be sure to offer leadership opportunities. Encourage members to help plan an event, organize a charity effort, or lead a group discussion. This will give them a stake in the region's success.
Regular and open communication is also very important. Help avoid the downfall of poor communication and understanding. Keep members informed about ABATE’s successes and challenges. A group chat, a bi-weekly email, or a brief update can help members feel connected and knowledgeable. Finally, be sure to listen to member feedback and avoid the problem of ignoring it or considering it unimportant, which can ruin trust. By building a strong membership community and providing clear, purposeful roles, we can definitely improve our membership retention.
It's up to all of us to keep our existing and new members coming back.
I Got Mine, Did You?
