Passing the Torch: Your Experiences Can Excite Young Riders
Older motorcyclists possess an advantage by inspiring the next generation of riders: experience, wisdom, and a passion that has been around forever. Seasoned riders can actively engage and mentor young people, sharing not just the thrill of the ride, but the responsibility and the heritage of motorcycling.
First, share your stories. Young people are captivated by authentic stories. Talk about your first ride, memorable road trips, challenges you overcame, and the friendships you've found because of riding. Promote the sense of freedom, the problem-solving skills learned on the road, and the perspective that motorcycling offers. These personal stories and thoughts have much more impact coming from you than any advertisement that’s out there.
Second, be a visible and responsible role model. Ride safely and demonstrate respect for the rules of the road. Ride within your limits. Let your actions speak louder than words. Invite younger family members or friends to events where they can see the positives of motorcycling– charity rides, bike shows, or even just a group ride to your favorite spot.
Third, offer guidance and mentorship. If a young person shows interest, answer their questions honestly. Explain the importance of proper training and in choosing the right first bike. Try taking them to a local dealership or introduce them to our SafeRider program. Your leadership can be what it takes to show those young riders how to get started and how to make informed decisions about riding.
Finally, bring them to meetings and events that show them firsthand the sense of community bikers have. Again, introduce them to other riders. Motorcycling isn't just about individual machines, it’s the passion for riding that builds lifelong friendships and great memories. By sharing your love of riding, maybe it will start a young rider on a lifelong love of the freedom of the road.
And don’t forget to give them a membership application. We need some fresh blood to carry on our work when we can’t lift our leg over the saddle anymore.
I Got Mine, Did You?
