Like many of you I also volunteer with other organizations in my community. One organization I'm heavily involved with is the Brillion Optimist. Each meeting we end with the Optimist Creed. As I think about best practices as we move forward as an organization and work to keep current members, get new ones, and engage them to be involved; I think the words in the creed are helpful. While there are times we are tired and may feel burnt out, I think that looking for the positive things happening and focusing on them can help us get through it. People gravitate to people, interactions, or experiences that make them feel good. This can be as simple as a greeting. When you see someone that you don't know at an event, say hi and make some small talk. Ask them how they heard about it or what brought them there. The conversation gives you an opportunity to invite them to become a member or just make them feel welcome. If they come and don't feel that, they won't likely give it another shot. Think back to when you joined. Were people friendly to you? Did they make you feel welcome? If you had been ignored and sat in the corner by yourself, would you be here today? Be the mentor to the future members that you appreciated.

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself-

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
