Sharing Differences

Imagine a world where everyone is the same. Only one type of music, only one clothing style, and everyone with the same personality. It would be a very boring world. We would never know if anything was good or bad, and no one would ever look for a better way. Fortunately, we have many differences in our world. Everyone is a little different from everyone else, even twins. Everyone has a little different personality. We see different types of families, both traditional, adoptive, and blended, depending on the unique situation we may find ourselves in. People that study education believe children learn at least eight different ways.

Motorcycling is no different. Everyone has a little different riding style. Some bikers like to ride fast and aggressively. This is their choice and style as long as they respect the laws and other roadway users. Other bikers just like to be out riding and don't care to go fast. They enjoy the freedom of motorcycling and are happy just to be out there. Still other bikers are commuters, who just want to get where they're going. They could be going to work, shopping, or to some vacation destination. The different styles of bikers have different styles of motorcycles to choose from. The aggressive rider may want a fast sport bike, the casual rider will be happy on a cruiser type motorcycle, while the commuter may choose a standard bike or a scooter. Depending on the wants and needs of the biker, a large number of styles and types of motorcycles are available.

Sometimes we may have trouble accepting differences. We are used to things the way we have them, and other ways or people may seem bad or something to make fun of. Differences are something to look forward to though. Without differences, we could never improve. Only by looking at what others have to offer, can we ever hope to improve ourselves and our own lives. Believe it or not, no matter what the difference is, you can always find something positive in someone else, you just have to look hard enough. A biker that prefers sport bikes may not like touring bikes. If that biker wants to take a long trip, a sport touring bike, combining parts of a sport bike and a touring bike, allows them to take all the stuff they need for their vacation.

As an aside, a true leader respects and sometimes uses differences to benefit all. A good ride captain will look at the different styles and abilities of those on a motorcycle ride and plan the trip for the enjoyment of all. Likewise, the leaders of ABATE of Wisconsin look at the differences and abilities of the various members and volunteers to guide the best people to do the various tasks that best suit their abilities.

So, when you're back in school, remember everyone is different. Just like bikers would look for the good parts of various styles of motorcycles, look for the good things that others have to offer and share your differences.

John
