Safe Rider Program
Overview and Purpose

The Safe Rider Program is an award-winning, WIDOT and Motorcycle Safety Foundation Certified and Approved Training Series. It is designed to lower the fatality rate on our roads by training riders in the proper and prudent use of motorcycles. Also it aims to increase their traffic skills and thereby improve their survival rates on the street. To this end we offer both the Basic Rider Course (BRC) (designed for beginning and minimally skilled riders) and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Experienced Rider Course (BRC2) (designed for the rider with at least a year of on-street operation.)

The Experienced Rider Course (BRC2) is mobile. The Safe Rider Program can offer it in venues where there has been little or no other training available.

Basic Rider Course (BRC)

The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is the beginner class. We work with the same necessary traffic skills as with the BRC2 but go further, adding such things as basic motorcycle control and emergency or unique situations that the beginning rider may have doubts about.

The range portion of the BRC is much longer and takes the beginning rider through basic control identification all the way to advanced turning and braking skills with exercises similar to the BRC2. As of this time, successful completion of the BRC will earn a "Waiver of Skill Test" form that will allow the trainee to bypass taking the Wisconsin Road Test to receive their motorcycle endorsement.

If you would like to get a head start you can download the MSF's BRC Handbook .

This year's cost for the beginning course is $160 which includes the use of one of our motorcycles.

Experienced Rider Course (BRC2)

The BRC2 is an intensive, interesting and fun class designed to increase your traffic skills and improve your riding technique. We work with traffic awareness, risk management, perception, and traction management, and preventing impaired riding. We work with braking skills -- both the basic and advanced nature, turning skills, and swerving. We cover evasive techniques that allow the rider a choice of methods to avoid both traffic crashes and handling errors that create single-vehicle crashes.

The Experienced Rider Course (BRC2) replaces the Experienced Rider Course (ERC) and adds a three hour classroom component. It is designed for riders with at least a year of riding and approximately 3000 miles of experience. It also includes a written and a riding evaluation. The goal in the future is to have the waiver of road test included with completion of this course.

Many insurance companies offer a ten to fifteen percent discount to riders who complete the BRC2. Many rider organizations, such as HOG, GWRRA, BMWMOA, will reimburse a portion of the tuition cost to their members. If you usually ride two-up, we encourage you to take the course with your primary passenger so you both get the benefit of the training. This also shows how your bike will handle the maneuvers with the extra weight of the passenger. This class is ridden on YOUR bike, be it Sport Bike, Cruiser, Touring Bike, or anything else. The only requirement is that it be street legal and have decent tires and front and rear brakes. You will need to show a drivers license and proof of insurance.

Unless other arrangements are made, the classes will be held from 8 AM to approximately 5 PM with a lunch break. The class room is in Tomah, and the riding is at the State Patrol Academy at Fort McCoy. You will be required to wear basic safety gear for the class, as well as to ride on the military base. This includes: Helmet, eye protection, long sleeves/jacket, full fingered gloves, long pants, and over the ankle boots. In addition you will need a bright colored, reflective vest to get on the base. We can supply you a vest to use for the day if you do not have one.

Print a copy of the BRC2 Application Form  and send it with your fee to assure you get a spot in the limited class schedule.

The cost of the BRC2 course is $65, or $80 with a passenger to cover the extra insurance cost. You must supply your own motorcycle.
